Helen and Alex purchased Denson Villa in December 2016. The house had been empty for two years and in need of substantial remedial work.
Before then it had been a much-loved family home, and the couple were keen to restore the house in a sympathetic way.
It was no small undertaking, and both Helen and Alex were heavily involved in the hands-on renovation. Work began in a very chilly January 2017, and the last room was completed shortly before Christmas that year.
Every external wall was stripped of lath and plaster, insulated, plasterboarded and re-plastered. All the downpipes and guttering were replaced. Much of the roof was reslated, and the stone work re-pointed. All the windows were removed and replaced with handmade double glazed sash and case units. The original pine floorboards were exposed, sanded and stained.
A substantial amount of was done using reclaimed materials, including reusing the architrave and skirting boards.Excluding the beds, the rooms were furnished with items individually sourced from antique emporiums in the Highlands or Moray, and the huge original rugs cleaned and returned to the rooms.
